Concept of MOTOR EXPO 2004
CARS TODAY…INNOVATIONS BEYOND EXPECTATION
• Up to now, motor vehicles in the form of 4-wheel vehicles have inhabited the earth for more than 100 years. They may be the only invention of mankind that combines the most advanced know-how in various fields at any time period in every stage of production demanding continuous development. Even Karl Benz, maker of the first car in the world, would have been impressed had he known how superior in body shape, utility and efficiency modern cars have become compared to their forefathers.
Especially if we expect merely efficiency and general utility from vehicles, we have to admit that vehicles today are innovations beyond our expectation in every way.
Starting from car structure and body that no longer depend primarily on steel. Aluminium space frame is now commonly used for structure whereas aluminium and carbon fibre are materials in popular use to make car body to reduce weight, enhance acceleration and decrease fuel consumption whilst increasing strength and rigidity of the body.
Performance of gasoline engines have been developed to the limit and we are heading into the era of fuel cell that is powerful, economical and clean.
There are also Highway Cruise Control system and Collision Mitigation system. The former uses a laser radar sensor and lane marking detector to help keep the car in its lane as well as regulate its speed and maintain optimal distance from the car in front. The latter helps prevent collision by emitting high frequency radar wave to detect obstruction ahead within a range of 100 meters, calculate distance apart, relative speed and path. If collision appears imminent the system will sound an alarm and tighten the seatbelt.
Furthermore, the braking system of some cars are so smart it will apply braking when a sensor detects the intention of the driver who takes his foot off the accelerator pedal very quickly that he wants to abruptly reduce speed or stop the car.
Other amenities in the car are also aimed at providing convenience and comfort to the driver and his passengers beyond expectations, for example, headlights that automatically adjust beam direction and distance for optimum night driving vision, seats that maintain constant body temperature, instrumentation and Heads up Display that project information in full colours onto the windshield at close to eye level to enable rapid viewing by driver without taking his eyes off the road.
All these are innovations that are already incorporated in cars today. Besides, there is more technology beyond expectation such as Drive-by-Wire that is being tested in concept and prototype cars and its real world application is just a matter of time.
The important thing to realize is that vehicles whose basic function is to transport us from place to place have been transformed into an innovation that provides us convenience, speed, comfort and safety more than any other invention in the past century.
