NEW AUTOMOTIVE HUB…FROM THAILAND TO THE WORLD


         • It is gratifying that the automotive industry of Thailand has leapt forward from the humble beginning a few decades ago, with just a handful of manufacturers making tyres, batteries, and leaf springs, to a comprehensive industry worth close to a hundred thousand Baht of today.
         Car assembly industry in particular has enjoyed the highest growth rate despite having had to go through a major economic crisis during 1997-1998 that dragged domestic demand down by 70%. The industry managed to turn crisis into opportunity by switching to car assembly for export that not only solved immediate problems effectively but also opened up new venues for Thailand's automotive industry in pursuit of the goal "Detroit of Asia".
         Throughout the past few years, propelled by vigorous support of the Government in the forms of BOI privileges granted to car assembly industry, permission to set up assembly plants freely, and doing away with compulsory local contents measure in the year 2000, the assembly line for export of almost every local plant has been running busily to meet overseas car demand.
         Combined with the superior competitive potential of Thai automotive industry, whether in terms of worker skill or reasonable production costs, etc., CBUs from Thailand's production line have gained trust and quality acceptance from users all over the world. That is why our export market growth has been fast and incessant, from 14,020 units of CBUs valued at 4.2 billion Baht in 1996 to 175,299 units at 84 billion Baht in 2001.           So much so that Thailand has now become a significant automotive production hub of the world, thanks to the fact that many mega car companies have invested vast amounts of capital to build car assembly plants and moved production bases of important models, both saloon cars and pickup trucks, to here. As a result, the country's export of assembled cars in 2002 almost reached 200,000 units with a value of nealy 100,000 million Baht. The numbers will keep getting higher in the coming years due to acceptance of quality of workmanship, which is higher than the strict benchmark set in the countries of origin, and market expansion – especially when Asean Free Trade Area functions fully this year.
         At the same time, as a new hub of world automotive production, the most modern knowledge and technology will flow briskly into Thailand, bringing about advancement in technical knowhow and economic stability in the near future.
         Therefore to share in the pride and support the great strides into the world market of Thailand's automotive industry, we have set the concept for “THAILAND INTERNATIONAL MOTOR EXPO 2003” as "NEW AUTOMOTIVE HUB…FROM THAILAND TO THE WORLD".
