AUTOMOBILE: THE ULTIMATE IN DYNAMIC LIFESTYLE
• For more than 30 years after the Second World War, whilst the world was trying to recover itself from the devastating War, it somehow managed to initiate some more wars, one after another as it were, notably the Korean War followed by the Vietnam War. Natural resources in those days were still regarded as abundant. Production technology during the 1970's and 1980's seemed to focus only on increasing production and efficiency of the product, without caring much about environmental impact.
This was what happened to automobile production in those days, wherein the automobile was a manufactured product that consumed a great deal of natural resources in its production. The automobile also played a large part in damaging the environment by emitting pollutants both in the forms of carbon monoxide from the engine and cfc from its air-conditioning unit, not to mention pollution spawned out during its manufacturing such as paint spray that diffused in the atmosphere during body paint work.Beside, life-expired automobiles kept adding up to the stock of the world's junk, because hardly any parts of them were ever recycled.Gradually, man came round to realise how much damage could result from such unrestrained development, and movements to protect and preserve the environment and natural resources began to emerge in earnest from different corners of the world from the late 1980's. As a consequence, automobile manufacturers have since been attaching increasing importance to developing production technology that is as harmless to the environment as feasible, including recycling of materials to reduce waste and, at the same time, minimise unnecessary depletion of natural resources.
Examples of the latest development of an environmentally friendly production process include the filtering of paint spray and paint thinner in the automobile paintshop which has a filtering efficiency as high as 99.8%, the temperature control system that, compared to the process used in 1970, has only 3% pollution leakage during drying; air-conditioning unit and other foam components that are all free of cfc (the atmoshere ozone layer destroyer), etc.Raw materials used in automobile production are sourced increasingly less from nature, and they are now subject to recycling many times over. Efforts have also been expended in researching for new forms of pure, clean energy to replace oil with prominence being given to hydrogen, which has a life cycle close to that of nature, being a constituent of water.From the results of such technological development, the modern automobile not only combines a fine shape with an excellent performance, but is also an invention that uses up so little natural resources in its production, doesn't spill out pollution whether in production or usage, and almost every part of it can be recycled for re-use, while the abandoned portions will decompose and revert back to nature, awaiting some future date when it will once again become raw material for automobile production, over and over again, forever.
So it can be said that the cycle "nature – vehicle – nature" is now taking place in an amazing way.
