Concept of MOTOR EXPO '95
A NEW PERSPECTIVE...CITY CARS FOR URBANITES
• Bangkok traffic conditions are reaching a critical stage. It is said that the major cause is imbalance between the number of cars and available road space. This viewpoint can be further developed: firstly that there are too many cars, and secondly that the roads are inadequate.
Such one-sided views have led to problem- tackling in a somewhat extreme and undesirable fashion. One side favours imposing maximum restriction on car ownership whereas the other advocates constructing more roads to whatever extent possible. Both approaches have their own weaknesses.
It is wrong, from the principles of both economics and freedom of choice, to restrict private car ownership, especially when the Government has not yet been able to provide an efficient mass transport system as an alternative.At the same time, it would be exceedingly difficult to build enough new roads to catch up with the number of vehicles, considering the enormity of budget and scale of land expropriation required, not to mention the way the city is laid out.
A more appropriate approach should attempt to make the best use of the limited available road space which can be accomplished in several ways, one of which is opting more for small sedans or city cars.Reverting back to the previous decade when the number of vehicles in Bangkok was much less than today, car buying decision did not require so much consideration of traffic congestion, parking space, or even pollution problems. Most buyers thus first opted for cars of medium and larger sizes that would provide them with luxury and comfort. Manufacturers correspondingly concentrated on these preferred choices of the market.
But during the past five years or so, whilst chronic traffic congestion has further deteriorated into almost unsolvable problems, small cars have gradually assumed a more prominent role on the streets of Bangkok. With their lower fuel consumption, cheaper price, ease of maneuverability, lower road-space requirement, ease of parking and lower emission of pollution, city cars have increasingly gained favour with city dwellers. Moreover, the technology of these cars has been so well developed and upgraded that they have become virtually a match for their larger siblings. And almost every make and model that is produced is imported into the country. So it can be said that city cars or vehicles for city dwellers have truly evolved into a new outlook for car users.
For such reason, we have prepared to organize BANGKOK MOTOR SHOW '95 based on the slogan “THE NEW PERSPECTIVE … CITY CARS FOR URBANITES” to pave the way for car companies to display their latest small sedans alongside those of other sizes for the public to choose freely according to the new perspective.
We also hope that BANGKOK MOTOR SHOW '95 will offer a new approach from the standpoint of automotive technology that will help in tackling the traffic and environmental problems in a way that does not encroach upon the basic rights and freedom of the people.
