Motorway Bangyai-Kanchanaburi section Nakhonpathom-Kanchanaburi extends free travel days from 3 PM Friday to 12 PM Monday

The Department of Highways has extended the free-to-use period for the intercity motorway (Motorway) Bangyai-Kanchanaburi (M81) section from Nakhonpathom West checkpoint to Kanchanaburi checkpoint, a distance of 51 km. Previously, it was free every week from Friday at 3:00 PM to Sunday at 9:00 PM. It is now free every Friday from 3:00 PM to Monday at 12:00 PM. Access is only available at Nakhonpathom West checkpoint and Kanchanaburi checkpoint.
In the past, after the trial opening of Motorway M81 Bangyai-Kanchanaburi, it was found to be popular and the volume of usage continuously increased. This reflects the efficiency of the route, which helps shorten travel time to only 30 minutes from the original 1 hour, positively impacting transportation, trade, investment, and tourism in Kanchanaburi province and the western region.

Driving over 80 km/h: Will you get a ticket?
Recently, it became a dramatic issue after some drivers received tickets for exceeding 80 km/h on Motorway M81, and dozens of cars were ticketed for driving faster than the legal limit. Pictures of the tickets were then posted online, showing a speed limit sign of 80 km/h on the ticket. This led to public criticism about whether issuing tickets for vehicles driving over 80 km/h on the motorway for exceeding the legal speed limit was a correct action.
The highway police clarified that Motorway M81 is not yet 100% complete. It is open for use from Nakhonpathom Province to Kanchanaburi Province, a total distance of 51 km. Vehicles driving on Motorway M81 are not allowed to exceed 120 km/h. The issue of detecting vehicles driving over 80 km/h on Motorway M81 is not true.
Even though there are 80 km/h speed limit signs installed on Motorway M81, these signs were installed by the Department of Highways' Safety Promotion Bureau to recommend appropriate speeds, not to detect vehicles driving over 80 km/h as commonly understood. The automatic speed cameras are set to detect vehicles driving over 120 km/h only.
In summary, currently, Motorway M81 does not detect vehicles exceeding 80 km/h, but the speed must not exceed 120 km/h. Otherwise, a ticket will be issued for driving faster than the legal limit.
