The number of road accidents in Thailand is alarmingly high. One of the reasons is that the brakes “fail”. We can avoid this as follows:
1. General Cases
Applying the brakes forcefully from the start allows the car to decelerate from high speed quickly. This leaves a significant distance between the car and the obstacle, and sufficient “time” for braking. Once you are sure that the remaining distance is enough for lighter braking, gradually reduce the pressure on the pedal.
2. Emergency Cases
If the car does not have an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and is being driven on a dry, clean road surface, there is no other option but to brake as quickly and forcefully as possible from the start. Naturally, the wheels will lock. If you are truly skilled or have a talent for judging braking force on various road surfaces, brake with just enough force to almost lock the wheels, or to lock them intermittently. However, this must be considered a unique special ability. Therefore, it is best to brake fully and let the wheels lock first.
For braking cars with ABS, press the pedal as fully as needed, without considering the slipperiness of the road surface.
