For expressways or motorways where cars travel at highspeeds, vehicles with passengers riding in the pickup bed are already prohibited from using them. But on regular roads, there are still some drivers and passengers who do not see the importance of this, traveling in the pickup bed, especially during the Songkran festival, where water splashing involves riding in the back of trucks with watertanks, without anything securing their bodies. When an accident occurs, such as a collision or a tire blowout, passengers sitting in the pickup bed will be thrown in different directions, which has frequently been reported in newspapers.
Even though the Land Traffic Act B.E. 2522, Chapter 3 on loading, stipulates in Section 20 that drivers transporting people, animals, or goods must arrange for protection to prevent the loaded people, animals, or goods from falling off, leaking, emitting odors, reflecting light, or being blown off the vehicle, which may cause nuisance, make the road dirty, stained, impair public health, or cause danger to persons or property. And Section 148 states that anyone violating Section 20 shall be fined no more than 500 baht.
Therefore, transporting people in the pickupbed without providing protection to prevent them from falling off the vehicle is considered an offense, even if it is not on an expressway or motorway.
Many may see the fine amount as insignificant! But if the safety of passengers is considered, investing in installing a pickup canopy can somewhat help protect lives. Or at least, drivers should exercise increased caution when driving with passengers in the back of the pickup, otherwise, they may regret it later.
This is a message of goodwill and concern for life from the government to the Thai people, because traveling by car on the roads today is riskier than in the past. This is because current automotive technology has advanced to the point where cars can travel faster than 100 km/h, which is a speed at which accidents often result in injuries or fatalities, as drivers may lack skills, or due to the vehicle itself, and other factors on the road, leaving very little time to rectify the immediate situation.
