Production
The total number of automobiles produced in May 2026 was 114,214 units, a decrease of 17.94 percent from May 2025. Although production for domestic sales increased by 12.78 percent, the total production volume decreased by 17.94 percent. This is the first time that production for domestic sales exceeded production for export, which was affected by the war in the Middle East, a key market ranking third in Thailand's automobile exports, with 200,001 units exported in 2025, accounting for 21 percent of total exports.

Sales
Domestic automobile sales in May 2026 totaled 57,765 units, an increase of 19.36 percent from April 2026 and an increase of 10.60 percent from May 2025. This was due to increased sales of electric passenger cars and electric SUVs resulting from rising oil prices due to conflicts in the Middle East, and increased truck sales due to some companies resuming production after completing factory relocation. Pickup truck sales increased by only 0.21 percent from the same month last year due to stricter credit lending by financial institutions amidst low domestic economic growth. Household debt remains high, exceeding 80 percent of GDP, weakening people's purchasing power. The global economy continues to face risks from international conflicts and trade wars.
Domestic sales may increase due to investments totaling 153,558 million baht in the first 5 months of this year, a 6.46 percent increase from the same period last year, as well as continued export growth in May 2026 of 10.6 percent from May last year, and the rising sales of electric vehicles due to sustained high oil prices. Additionally, the Bank of Thailand has revised its GDP growth forecast for Thailand this year to 2.3 percent. This, coupled with government policies to reduce public expenditure and stimulate the economy, particularly foreign and Thai investment, is expected to boost sales.
