Innovative Energies – World-Changing Vehicles
• The world has depended on petroleum as fuel for internal combustion engines in all kinds of vehicles for over a century, testifying to the irrefutable "great benefit" of fossil fuels.
But at the same time it has to be admitted that fossil fuels are "very detrimental", as during the past century air pollution caused by combustion of fossil fuels has increased continuously, reaching critical levels in many areas of the world including Thailand.
Besides, there is another crisis looming, and that is oil shortage predicted to happen within 50 years’ time according to an estimate of oil reserves at various sources worldwide by BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2009.
If we want to end the pollution crisis and avoid sudden oil shortage crisis, automotive manufacturers would need to find the "transition point" today.
In fact, efforts to come up with energies to replace fossil oils as well as vehicles to run on alternative energies have been ongoing for several decades, undergoing innumerable trials and errors up until now when manufacturers are of the same opinion that clean pollution-free energy like "electricity" is the best choice.
However, the transition of automotive technology from fossil oils to electric has to be developed step by step. Initially, electric motors are put to work in tandem with conventional internal combustion engines, becoming hybrid vehicles that can run efficiently and economically while emitting less pollutants, so much so that they are expected to replace conventional internal combustion engine vehicles pretty soon.
As for electric vehicles, though we are at the stage of developing a battery that is lighter, faster-recharging, with larger capacity and thus longer travel range per charge, the "plug-in" technology and installation of a small on-board engine to "spin" an electrical generator during use enable the latest generation of electric cars to have performances comparable to vehicles in general.
Moreover many sophisticated technologies are waiting to be developed for the purpose of producing ideal electric cars such as hydrogen-fueled vehicles that use fuel cells to produce electricity, solar vehicles that are powered by direct solar energy, etc.
In many developed countries hybrid and electric vehicles are now widely manufactured, sold and used with strong Government support. A study in Europe found that electric vehicles could reduce the problem of greenhouse gasses up to a maximum of 24%.
Thus the increasing popularity of hybrid vehicles and the advent of electric vehicles can truly be regarded as the "transition point" of the world.
