THE WONDER CYCLE...AUTOMOBILE AND NATURE

         • For over half a decade car users and traders in this country have tasted the freedom of buying and selling – since the Government announced the reduction in import duties for completely built up cars in the year 1992.
But the severe economic downturn and fluctuating foreign exchange rates that have beset our economy in the past year or so have made free trade a luxury that we can no longer afford, and the Government has to set up a tariff wall to restrain car import once again.
Be that as it may, we cannot deny the immense benefits of the free market system, especially in the setting of standards of assembly and advanced production technology by the "World Cars" for "Thai Cars" from local assembly plants to emulate.
Therefore, allowing CBU's to be imported in reasonable numbers while sumultaneously promoting the domestic automotive industry, both for local consumption and the export market, would seem to be a solution most appropriate to the situation and reality.
The fact that in 1997 the number of cars assembled for the local market had dropped 20% from the previous year, in contrast to the surge in cars export which had more than doubled both in volume and value (information from automotive vehicles group, Industrial Council of Thailand) not including export of automotive engines and parts which had also increased at no less a rate.
Moreover, the growth rate of our automotive industry is still on the increase as a result of investment in production plants in the country by large manufacturers of the world who recognize the future potential of Thailand. In this regard, credit should be given to the relentless effort over several decades of the pioneering companies to develop and modernize production techniques in order for our exports to be internationally accepted.
Such phenomenon not only indicates a bright future for Thailand’s automotive industry, but also provides proof that "Thai Cars" from an assembly line within the country are now of a quality that is comparable to that of the "World Cars". For this reason, we have been preparing to organize "Bangkok Motor Show '99" under the concept "The New Horizon...Thai Cars – World Cars" to provide an opportunity to the public to touch and select both "Thai Cars" with internationally accepted quality and "World Cars" packed with advanced technologies.
Above all, the Show will let them witness and share together the discovery of the gleaming "New Horizon" of automotive market in Thailand.
